NSG : The Black Cats (Blog Series- 1, Ep.- 1)

 National Security Guard

The National Security Guard better known to the general public as NSG or " Black Cats " or the " Black Cat Commandoes " is a counter terrorism squad and is specially trained for urban warfare and hostage situations. This is the major reason that they were called during 26/11 attacks as it was a situation wherein both the skills of urban warfare and hostage relief were required.

Why Was The NSG Formed?

Many of us are familiar with the operation " Blue Star " of 1984 where the para sf i.e., the special forces operatives of the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Army stormed into the Golden Temple of Amritsar in order to neutralize the Khalistani minded militants. Though the forces successfully regained the control of Golden Temple a need of a different force was realized which could carry on operations in presence of civilians in urban areas and also could release hostages from enemy capture. So this force our beloved "NSG" was formed on 22nd of September 1986 under the National Security Guard Act 1986.

Governing Body

Though NSG recruits commandoes from both Central Armed Police Forces ( CAPFs) and the Indian Army it completely comes under "Ministry of Home Affairs."  

Functioning of NSG 

The NSG is further classified into two parts : -

51 & 52  - SAG ( 51 -Special Action Group ) - This group consists of personnel that are recruited from the Indian Army  Some Army officers volunteer for NSG whereas some of the special forces operatives of the Parachute Regiment ( Para SF) are sent on duty to NSG for a certain period of time.

11,12 & 13 - SRG ( 11,12 & 13 - Special Rangers Group ) - This group consists of personnel recruited from forces other than the Indian Army like the CRPF, Assam Rifles, etc. Earlier this group was used for VIP protection, etc. but now it has been removed from protection duties and now it performs the same duties that are performed by  the 51 & 52 SAG.

Interesting Fact

The NSG is can counter terrorism on land, in sea and even in air. 

The Special Composite Groups 

• 26 SCG Mumbai 
• 27 SCG Chennai
• 28 SCG Hyderabad 
• 29 SCG Kolkata
• 30 SCG Gandhinagar

This composite groups were formed post the 26/11 Mumbai Attacks in order to reduce the reaction time.

Other tan all these groups mentioned above their are two rather three more groups called the Electronic Support Group ( ESG ), National Bomb Data Centre and most important the Headquarters.
