MARCOS : Alligators With Wings!!! (Blog Series- 1, Ep.- 4)

MARCOS : Marine Commandos

Before I start sharing information regarding the MARCOS with you, I would surely like to explain you the title. As we all are familiar with alligators, you might be wondering how they can have wings? But let me tell you this is to explain the three dimensional nature of the these great warriors. The alligators are amphibians, i.e. they can live on land and in water but the MARCOS bear one more quality that is they can fight even in air. So they are indeed ALLIGATORS WITH WINGS!

"THE FEW, THE FEARLESS"

Formation and Governing Body

In 1955, the Indian Military established a diving school in Cochin in order to teach combat divers skills such as explosive disposal, clearance, etc. But then during the 1971 war the combat divers failed to achieve their desired outcomes and therefore  in April 1986 Indian Navy started planning for the creation of force that would be capable of undertaking maritime operations, counter insurgency and reconnaissance. Three volunteer officers from the then established diving unit were sent to the US Navy SEALS where they underwent rigorous training and thereafter on the14th day of February, 1987, The 'Indian Marine Special Force' came into existence with those three officers as its first members and it was renamed as 'Marine Commando Force' in 1991. But still the civilians call this force as MARCOs and in Kashmir, they've gained popularity as 'Dadi wala Fauji' , meaning soldiers with beard. It is a special operation force that comes under the Indian Navy.

Training And Selection Process

Only some of the most physically fit personnel of the Indian Navy are selected in the Marine Commando Force. The probationers here have to undergo extremely tough training, may be even tougher than the training of the Para SF and the Garuds. In the pre training selection process that's made of two parts, Indian Navy personnel who aspire to join the MARCOS undergo a three days physical fitness test and you'll be surprised to know 80% of the applicants are screened out! There is a further screening test known as hell week where the probationers are deprived of sleep, food and each and every type of comfort. About 98% of volunteers who enroll fail to qualify. Just Imagine how tough the process will be!

In Action

Though Majority of operations that the MARCOS take part in are highly classified that is they are not open to general public some are very well known such as the operation of MARCOS in the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. The MARCOS also operate in Wular Lake in Kashmir which is a 65 square kilometre freshwater lake. They've been active in various other operations such as Operation Pawan, Operation Rakshak, the world famous operation Rahat, India-China skirmishes of 2020 and many more operations.

Bases

The MARCOS currently operate out of the naval bases such as Mumbai, Vishakhapatnam, Goa, Kochi and Port Blair. The Headquarters are in Vishakhapatnam called INS Karna named after the legendary warrior Karna of the Mahabharata. It was established in the year 1987.

🔥Go For It🔥

At last I would thank all of you for reading this blog and mainly I also want to inspire the youth of the nation to join the armed forces. If you are not interested to dedicate your entire life for the Indian Armed forces you can always go for the short service commission. Join the Indian Navy! It takes balls to volunteer for special forces like MARCOS but if you have it in you then for sure go for it. Hope you too become a 'Dadi wala Fauji' one day! Jai Hind!🔥🔥
