No need to justify the title in this blog as you all must be aware of the advertisement published by Indian Army to attract the youth wherein Major Praful Kumar from the PARA SF is heard asserting "We don't exist so that you can." And indeed its a truth as the PARA SF is elite special force of our beloved Indian Army and all of us today will be applauding the professionalism, toughness and the valour of these great commandos...

Formation and Governing Body

The parachute regiment of the Indian Army is one of the oldest airborne regiments of the world. It was formed during the year 1941 in the 'British Indian Army.' As of now, of course the elite PARA SF is an integral part of the 'Indian Army' and has been carrying out severely dangerous and successful missions right from the time of independence. It comes under the Indian Army which comes under the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Government of India (GOI). It falls under the category special force.


Training and Selection Process

Once the officers and jawans get into the Indian Army they themselves volunteer for joining the PARA SF. After the heinous amount of efforts put by the officers and jawans to get into the army, it takes balls to volunteer for the special forces. Those who volunteer and qualify the medical and fitness tests to the highest standards are sent for probation that takes place before training. During the probation period the probies have to go through hell week and various other mentally and physical disturbing things. This is done so that the commandos can give their best during the most difficult situations. The probies (probationers) who successfully complete their probation are sent to further training which is highly classified.

The training is so tough that it is known for one of its highest drop rate.


In Action

Though most of the operations carried out by the PARA SF are classified a handful of them are known, the three most famous operations carried out by them are:

  1. Operation Blue Star of 1984
  2. 2015 Myanmar Surgical Strikes
  3. 2016 Surgical Strikes

Note

It must be noted that not all paratroopers are special forces operators. Some are special forces operators and some are some are normal paratroopers (even to become a paratrooper is very difficult).


Battalions

The battalions of the PARA SF have been systematically assigned for various terrains -

  1. 1 PARA SF for Urban Warfare
  2. 2 PARA SF for Mountain Warfare
  3. 3 PARA SF for Desert Warfare
  4. 4 PARA SF for Mountain Warfare
  5. 9 PARA SF fir Urban and Mountain Warfare
  6. 10 PARA SF for Desert Warfare
  7. 11 PARA SF for Jungle Warfare
  8. 12 & 21 PARA SF for Jungle & Mountain Warfare
